2024 Composition Winner
Timothy Amalavage-Smith (b. 1997), a native of Huntsville, AL, received his Bachelor of Music
in Music Composition from the University of Alabama (2019), where he studied with Amir
Zaheri, and Master of Music in Composition at the University of Louisville (2021), studying with
Marc Satterwhite. Currently, he is revisiting the University of Alabama in order to pursue a
Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition, under the tutelage of Amir Zaheri.
Accolades he has acquired over time include being a winner of the Tennessee Valley Music
Festival Composer’s Forum in 2014, having pieces premiered at the Dance Alabama Film
Festival in 2018 and 2019, having music featured at the Alabama Screendance Festival in 2020,
being the winner of the Huntsville Master Chorale’s 2020 Composition Competition, being the
2021 recipient of the Huang Family Composition Commission, being a finalist of the 2023
American Prize in Choral Composition, and being selected as the Alabama Orchestra
Association’s 2024 Composition Competition winner.
Amalavage-Smith has also had pieces
performed by the University of Alabama Singers, the University of Alabama Contemporary
Ensemble, Twickenham Winds, UofL University Symphony Orchestra, Longleash Piano Trio, the
Brass Band of Huntsville, and the University of Alabama Opera Theatre. His biggest inspirations
have always been nature and other art forms.
