2015 Composition Winner

The Alabama Orchestra Association is pleased to announce that James Danly is the 2015 winner of the annual composition contest. The original work, The Door in the Wall, was premiered by the Festival Orchestra at the All-State Orchestra Festival held February 12-15, 2015.

From the composer…

I learned percussion from my uncle, William F. Ludwig, and I was a percussionist in my high school orchestra and the Chicago Businessman’s Orchestra. I earned an undergraduate degree from Yale University, then a master’s degree in music theory and composition from Northwestern University. I studied composition with Alan Stout at Northwestern, and then took private composition lessons with David McKay of Belmont University.

I have composed a number of works for piano, chamber ensembles, string orchestra, and full orchestra, but until now I have refrained from publishing any of my pieces. My music includes tonal and post tonal works, minimalist as well as traditional forms.
