2021 Composition Winner

Congratulations to Christopher Alan Schmitz for being named Alabama Orchestra Association’s Composition Contest 2021 winner. His piece will be premiered by the Festival Orchestra on February 14, 2021 at Moody Music Building in Tuscaloosa.

Christopher Alan Schmitz composes original music for band, orchestra, choir, solo, chamber ensembles, electronic music, and feature film. Recent premieres of major works include a Violin Concerto (2019, for Amy Schwartz Moretti, Director of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings and member of the James Ehnes Quartet), and Call of the Opera (2019, for Denson Paul Pollard, bass trombonist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra). Christopher’s music is performed internationally and appears on the PARMA and Beauport Classical recording labels. His sheet music is published and distributed by C. Alan Publications, Cimarron Press, Opus Music Publishers, and Cherry Classics. Christopher currently serves as Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of Texas at Austin.
