2018 Composition Winner

Congratulations to Jesus J. Martinez for being named Alabama Orchestra Associaiton’s Composition Contest 2018 winner with his work titled The Hanging Tree. This piece will be premiered by the Festival Orchestra on February 11, 2018 at Moody Music Building in Tuscaloosa.

Jesus J. Martinez is a 2011 graduate from the University of Texas at Arlington as a Music Education Major specializing in percussion. He went on to complete his Masters in Music Composition at Southern Methodist University. In August 2013, he was selected as the SMU Student Composer-in-Residence for the Irving Symphony Orchestra in Irving, TX. Irving performed the commissioned piece, “Harmonic Tremor,” in February 2014. In June 2015, Jesus was selected as a participant to the NYU/ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop, where he had the opportunity to work with today’s leading composers in film and television. In October, Jesus’ orchestral work, The Hanging Tree, was selected as Honorable Mention in the 2015 Earshot Columbus Symphony Orchestra Composer Competition. In March 2016, Jesus was selected as a winning composer for the 3rd Annual Alabama Symphony Orchestra New Music Readings. Jesus is a member of TMEA, PAS, and ASCAP and is currently published by C. Alan Publications. Jesus is also a Vic Firth education artist. Jesus is currently the percussion specialist for Sam Houston High School in Arlington, TX.
