2017 Composition Winner
Congratulations to Alejandro Basulto-Martínez for being named Alabama Orchestra Associaiton’s Composition Contest 2017 winner with his work titled Triptico de Luz. This piece will be premiered by the Festival Orchestra on February 12, 2017 at Moody Music Building in Tuscaloosa.
Alejandro’s composition style is characterized by a blend of diverse composition techniques and references to contemporary popular music. His music has been performed by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, CEPROMUSIC, Mexico City Wood Wind Quintet and Sequenza Sur, among others, in festivals such as the Cervantino, Miguel Bernal Jiménez and New Music Forum Manuel Enríquez. Alejandro has composed music for several multimedia projects and films, including numerous collaborations with Mexican award-winning studio Ava in Motion, which range from the world’s biggest projection mapping in Romania (iMapp Bucharest) to the Russian festival Circles of Light at the Bolshoi Theater. Alejandro’s awards include the Alabama Association Composition Competition (2017), First Prize in the International Composition Competition “Manuel Enríquez” (2015), Second Place in the Composition Competition “Nuestra América” (2014), the “Youth Award in Arts” from the State of Yucatán (2012), First Place in the National Competition for Composition Students (2010), among others. Upcoming engagements include commissions by the Orchestra of the Swan (UK) and the Fort Bend Orchestra (Texas), and a regular season debut concert with the Barcelona Symphonic Band.
Alejandro holds a Bachelor’s degree from the “Conservatorio de las Rosas” (cum laude) where his principal teacher was Dr. Javier Álvarez, a Master’s degree in Film Scoring and a graduate diploma in Orchestral Conducting from the ESMUC (Barcelona, Spain) where he studied with Dr. Salvador Brotons. He earned the Fulbright-García Robles scholarship to study a Master’s Degree in Music Composition at the Moores School of Music-University of Houston, under the guidance of Dr. Rob Smith, where he is the Assistant Director of AURA Contemporary Music Ensemble. Alejandro was born and raised in Mérida, Yucatán in the southeast of México.

About the Work:
Triptico de Luz (Spanish for Triptych of Light) is a small suite of three movements originally composed to accompany three video mappings of the award-winning Mexican studio Ava in Motion. The video mappings were proyected on the facades of three different buildings around the world: (1) Bolshoi Theater, Moscow, Russia, (2) Niigata Art Museum, Japan, and (3) the Palace of the Parliament, Bucharest, Rumania. The latter was the biggest video mapping to date.
One of the sources of inspiration of the work were the buildings, which served as a canvas for the light spectacle. The opening movement is both lyrical and rhythmic, since the beautiful Bolshoi Theater is deeply associated with Ballet and Opera. The second movement is a short scherzo built around a pentatonic scale, which is widely used in Japanese music. Finally, the third movement tries to emulate the majesty of the Bucharest’s Palace of the Parliament.
