2023 Composition Winner

Michael Todd Kovell is an American composer of original concert, film, and popular music who strives to connect with audiences while exploring the language of music.

His concert music has been performed in the United States, Canada, and Europe including the Northwest Sinfonia (Seattle), St. Helens String Quartet (Seattle), the Phinney Ridge Youth Orchestra (Seattle), the CODE ensemble (Ohio), and members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (Scotland). This year he was a finalist for the call for scores with the Lowell Chamber Orchestra (Massachusetts). His “Suite for Tar and Chamber Orchestra” appeared on the 2013 award winning album “Celebrate World Music”.

His music has been performed by acclaimed organist David Bohn, as part of the Vox Novus 15 minutes of fame series, by flautist Casey Granofsky and oboist David Vanbiesbrouck of the Scarborough Philharmonic (Canada), as well as by banjoist Zachary McDonald (Florida).

Born in Seattle, Todd started his musical journey in Las Vegas with well known cellist Hyman Gold. Upon returning to the Northwest he studied cello with Cordelia Wikareski-Miedel and played in the Tacoma Youth Symphony. He received a Bachelor’s degree in composition from the Oberlin Conservatory where he studied composition with Richard Hoffmann. He earned a Master’s degree in film scoring from the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program while studying with Hummie Mann. He has also studied compostion at the Arnold Schoenberg House in Vienna.

In addition to composing Todd teaches music theory for the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring program, and founded and conducts the Phinney Ridge Youth Orchestra in Seattle. When Todd is not involved in music he spends his time battling blackberry vines in the yard, watching sports on television, and playing with his 7-year-old son.
